How do you read a synastry chart?
“How do you read a synastry chart?” was a question I answered on Quora.
Well first off, a synastry chart may actually be two charts or a chart of two dials – as in the example – that you will be looking at, and making a comparison between the two, for how they are likely to get along.
One could easily write a book on answering your question so I’m only going to give a very general overview.
I’m going to assume you know about astrology and reading other forms of charts.
You take stock of major aspects between the two charts – such as conjunctions, trines, squares and oppositions.
Normally allow for 4 degrees orb.
If is useful to check out the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn across the two charts. The rising signs are also very valuable.

You really want as many harmonious links as possible – such as conjunctions or trines.
For example if the Sun of one is conjunct the Moon of the other then they are likely to get along. Same for the trine. But a square or an opposition between the pair would suggest potential conflict.
Although that said, signs opposite one another are likely to be attracted to one another – whether they ultimately get on or not.
Mars and Venus links are important in sexual attraction. For longevity a Venus/Saturn link is good to look out for.
Notably, the two people in the example chart have an exact Moon conjunct Venus, a quincunx aspect between the other Moon and Venus, a quincunx between the two Venus’s, and loose links between other vital components. There is a powerful, almost fatalistic pull between the two. Their relationship is strong but also challenging. And even though they are very different their relationship works.
It is not impossible for two people to get along if there is very little astrological connection but it will take a lot of conscious effort – and I doubt it would last.
I hope this helps.
