Do Christians believe in astrology?
Do Christians believe in astrology? A question I answered on Quora.
This is similar to the question: Do you believe in God?
For anyone to be able to answer the question fairly and reasonably, you first have to define what you mean by the term “God.”
The same ground rule should apply to the question: Do Christians believe in astrology?
To answer it, you have to define what you mean by the term “astrology?”
Astrology is not what you may think it is!
It is not what most of us think it is. Astrology is a big subject that can involve many years of study – indeed any astrologer worth their salt will tell you that learning the art is ongoing.
The astrology that you are invoking by your question is Western astrology – other forms, such as Chinese and Indian, are also available.
That said, I’ll wager that the astrology your knowledge is actually based upon is pop astrology. So-called astrology that can be found in newspapers and magazines or on the Web. This is what probably most of us think “astrology” is per se.
It is actually a dumbed-down form of astrology – originally designed to sell newspapers. Pop astrology is like knowing your 2 times table and calling it mathematics.
And on that basis it makes the question meaningless. What should have been asked is:
Do Christians believe in star signs?
That’s at the right level for this discussion.
As a short answer to this question, I’d say that probably most practicing Christians steer clear of it – I would too!
